Hip Hop & Classical Music Meet As Devine Carama & LexPhilharmonic Perform
Saturday, June 12th, Kentucky hip hop artist and activist, Devine Carama, made history by becoming the first rap artist to ever perform with the Lexington Philharmonic!
Words from Devine Carama describing yesterday’s show:
”I can’t even put last night in words… My brother J.k. Wyche decided a long time ago that our mission wasn’t going to be making HITS but instead making HISTORY. I reached out to Sarah Phoebe Thrall almost 4 years ago with this crazy idea of bringing the Lexington Philharmonic and HIP HOP together! Not just a musical collaboration but to create a space where people from ALL walks of life could interact and get to know each other! Though hatred exist, I believe it’s ignorance and lack of communication that breeds much of the division we see today. And through the ups and downs, a global pandemic, social unrest, personal and professional challenges God finally said “the time is NOW!”
I first want to thank Kelly, Sarah & Laura Beth of LexPhil (and the sound team) for their hard work and dedication. They were the logistical architects of this operation and because of their diligence and belief in this collaboration, it worked so smoothly. Thanks to Lori Ann & Lexington Art League for all their hard work and preparing the venue! Special thanks to all of the community and food vendors for feeding and enlightens our patrons! Shouts to my man Colmon Elridge for warming up the mic and getting the even started!
Special thanks to Mayor Linda Gorton and her wonderful husband for coming out and supporting the arts! It meant so much to have her there enjoying herself and fellowshipping with the people! Thanks to my family Cierra S. Spaulding, Jackie Spaulding, Spiffy Clark, Beata Weaver-Pickens, Floyd Greene, Mr. Ken, O'Cornell Mundy and Monica Mundy for being front and center as well as our good friends! Thanks to everyone that came out and rocked with us!!!! Major props to our featured vocalists Rae'Shawna Michelle Campbell, Courtney Moriah, and Ollice Spaulding as well as our poets J Nicole Gordon & Christian J. Motley for bringing much needed soul and texture to the show.
Finally, I want to thank the “LexPhill 5” string quintet for your amazing artistry and willing to go outside of your box! Your skill and passion was on full display and was nothing short of amazing! Thank you JK for being the best and what you do and for coming along this ride with me. I know I can be a jerk sometimes but you know I love you.
Here are a few pictures courtesy of my man Brandon S. Turner and more will be coming later this week!!!”
